Leftover knob holes get plugged and filled flush, and every new pull is bored through a jig so the whole row sits straight. Tired hinges get replaced during the same window, since cabinet painting already has the doors off.
For the money, handles and knobs change a kitchen's look more than anything, and they catch the eye right after cabinet painting. Hardware is also where quotes tend to get fuzzy, so ours puts it on a separate line with the number of pieces.
Plenty of 1970s doors carry one small knob in the middle, and many 1980s doors rely on a wooden edge strip or finger groove. A modern bar pull means boring fresh holes through a finished door. On thirty-odd doors and drawers that adds up, so it is priced on the cabinet painting quote before we pick up a drill.
Holes go in once the primer is on and before the last coats of colour. Any small chip from the drill bit gets filled and covered. We set every hole with a jig, since a handle sitting even slightly crooked is obvious from the doorway.
When a knob becomes a pull, the old hole gets a wood plug, filler, sanding and primer. Once cabinet painting is done, you will not find it.
When a door swings open on its own or bangs closed, the hinge is worn out, and adjusting a hinge with a loose pin does not help. New hinges cost little extra during the job because every door is already down and unscrewed.
Most kitchens built since around 1990 use concealed European cup hinges. Upgrading them to soft-close is a direct swap, because the round cup pocket is already cut into the door.
Older Meadowvale kitchens are a different story. Exposed and half-hidden hinges from the 1970s are often out of production. You can clean and reuse them, search for a match, or have the doors drilled for hidden hinges. Drilling is a separate step with its own price. Brass and soft gold now outsell brushed nickel on painted kitchens, and matte black is still a favourite with modern colours. A sample door helps, because brass looks very different on warm white than on cool grey.
The length of a pull changes the style. A long bar on a wide drawer looks modern, and a short pull on the same drawer looks classic. The price is about the same.
Mixing metals works if you follow a rule. Use one finish in each zone and change finishes between zones. Colour and metal pairings are covered on our colour page.
Handles tightened onto fresh paint leave a permanent outline, so hardware is the final step, after rehanging and hinge adjustment are done.
On that last visit we also line up the gaps. We adjust each hinge until the spaces between doors are even all the way along. That step is what makes a kitchen look finished and not just painted.
