Some kitchens are poor candidates, and we will turn the job down before we do it badly. Vinyl lifting off doors by the dishwasher, particleboard bloated by a leak and boxes whose joints have failed are problems no coating can solve.
Fine cherry, walnut or white oak often deserves a refinish, and our refinishing page explains when. Orange-toned builder oak almost always looks better painted, which our oak page shows. We recommend whatever suits the wood in front of us.
Meadowvale was planned as a complete community. Construction began in December 1970, Meadowvale Town Centre opened in 1978, and Lake Aquitaine was dug in the middle of it all in 1976 and 1977. The homes went up in waves, and each wave brought its own kind of kitchen.
The 1970s streets east of Winston Churchill Boulevard hold bungalows, backsplits, semis and townhouses with dark stained or wood-grain doors, so those jobs are mostly degreasing and heavy scuffing. The 1980s homes of Meadowvale West bring golden oak and almond melamine, so shellac and bonding primer lead the work. Lisgar, with homes from the late 1980s through the 2000s, and the newer Meadowvale Village streets add maple, thermofoil and painted MDF. Some cabinets have wood that deserves to be seen. Refinishing takes the worn finish off, evens out the colour with new stain and seals it with a sprayed clear coat, so the grain stays in view instead of disappearing under paint.

Soft white or greige on top with sage, navy or charcoal below is the combination we are asked about most, and the island usually gets the darker shade. Painting an island by itself also counts as a full cabinet painting job.
