Meadowvale was one of the first large planned communities in Canada. Markborough Properties announced it in 1969 and the first houses went up in the early 1970s, so a large share of kitchens here are close to fifty years old. A lot of them still belong to the people who bought them new. Those kitchens are sturdy, but they carry decades of cooking film, old hinges and door styles that need careful prep before cabinet painting.

The boxes stay where they are. Original Meadowvale carcasses are often plywood or thick particleboard that has stayed square for decades, and there is no reason to throw good boxes in a dumpster.

Cabinet painting on a 1970s kitchen starts with cleaning, not colour. Fifty years of cooking grease builds a film that regular cleaners slide over, so we use a solvent degreaser and then scuff every surface before primer goes on.
The first streets built in Meadowvale, east of Winston Churchill Boulevard, are full of bungalows, backsplits and semis with their original dark stained doors. Many are flat slab doors with a routed groove, or doors with a wood-grain skin over particleboard. Both take cabinet painting well once the prep is right. Oak holds tannin, and tannin pulls through water-based primer as brown or yellow stains. Cabinet painting on oak starts with a shellac-based primer that locks the tannin in for good.
Meadowvale West was built out over the 1980s, and Lisgar grew from 1986 onward into the 2000s, so arched and raised-panel doors in golden or honey oak show up on both sides of Winston Churchill Boulevard. Not every cabinet should get cabinet painting. Solid cherry, walnut or clean white oak often looks best with its old finish stripped, the tone adjusted with stain, and a new clear coat sprayed on top.

A brush pulls paint across a door and leaves ridges. Our cabinet painting is sprayed in thin coats instead, so the finish dries flat and even.
We take doors and drawer fronts away and spray them inside a filtered booth. Face frames and boxes are coated right where they hang, behind sheets of plastic, once the floors, counters and doorways nearby are covered. Ordinary primer does not stick to melamine, laminate or thermofoil. On shiny doors like these, cabinet painting begins by dulling the face with sandpaper and laying down a primer that bonds to plastic.
Plenty of 1980s Meadowvale kitchens got almond or white melamine doors with an oak strip for a pull, and plenty of 1990s Lisgar kitchens got white thermofoil. Once thermofoil starts lifting by the dishwasher or range, painting it is off the table, since no coating will glue a loose vinyl skin back down. A single puffed-up door under the sink does not justify a new kitchen. We swap in a new door, prime it and spray it with the rest during cabinet painting, so the whole run looks the same.

Right now, the request we hear most is a deep-coloured island set against pale wall cabinets. Navy, forest green, sage or charcoal on the island with warm white or greige on the walls is the usual pairing.

Homes in Lisgar and Meadowvale Village from the 1990s and 2000s usually came with extra storage: a tall pantry unit, uppers over the washer and dryer, maybe a bench by the side door. Before primer, we plug and fill the holes left by old knobs so they vanish under the colour. A drilling jig places every new hole, which keeps each pull level with its neighbours.
